Greenville Family Partnership staff, interns and board members provided information and resources to the attendees on how to avoid tobacco use. “Rage Against the Haze”, the South Carolina statewide organization which serves as a tobacco prevention resource for teens, was also present.
It is widely accepted that prevention is crucial when dealing with young people and tobacco use. The onset of tobacco use most commonly begins at an early age when kids, influenced by peer pressure and a lack of consequential concern, will experiment with smoking or dipping.
GFP's prevention efforts focus on making healthy choices with positive reinforcement from peers and parents.
Tobacco use has serious and life-long consequences. Tobacco is a gateway drug in that it may increase the odds of experimentation with other drugs. Addiction to tobacco is difficult to overcome and users must face multiple attempts to quit.
Through the efforts of GFP, in cooperation with Furman University Athletics, young people will be empowered to choose healthy lifestyles.
