Preparation Time: 2 or 3 weeks to practice
Length of Time to Cook: 2 hours
Directions: Read the storybook in preparation for singing the Red Ribbon Song. It will set the tone for practicing the song and will demonstrate the power of the red ribbon - the power of a community working together for the benefit of mankind.
Find out which students are willing to sing in front of an audience. If there are any students who are painfully shy, have them perform other important tasks before, during, and after the performance so that they will still feel like they are a part of the performance. Recruit the School Music Teacher to serve as a vocal coach.
Be sure to schedule the practice sessions far in advance so that students will be ready by the night of the first performance. Have students perform in a classroom or music room; for certain grade levels or for the entire school, including faculty, parents, and family members; for the community or for nursing homes, hospitals, orphanages, etc. Have students perform at a Red Ribbon Rally, Walk, Parade or Spirit/Banner Competition. But don’t forget to have everyone wear red clothing and red ribbons!
Clean Up & Storage: Store the storybooks, CD’s, and song lyrics just in case you want to do it again next year!
Discussion Ideas: Discuss how the red ribbon symbolizes how a community can work together to change the world for the benefit of all mankind and to alleviate most of society’s ills.
