"Tried but True" Red Ribbon Ideas for Schools
Schools are a powerful resource. The success of the Red Ribbon Celebration is due to the tremendous faculty, administration, and parental involvement.
- Designate a Red Ribbon Coordinator to chair a committee of students, parents, and staff.
- Encourage juniors and seniors to plan prevention activities for elementary and middle school students.
- Have students make a Red Ribbon banner and display it at the front of your facility or in the cafeteria or gym.
- Decorate your school (inside and outside), bulletin boards, windows, and hallways with Red Ribbon posters.
- Sponsor a Red Ribbon door-decorating contest among the different grades.
- Schedule assemblies or lunch time activities with local speakers and radio station remotes with social services and other prevention groups to allow your students to hear information regarding the dangers of tobacco, alcohol, and other illicit drug abuse.
- Observe Wear Red Day – Hold a contest in which students or staff wear red. Then students vote on who is dressed dressed the best. Have a prize for the most creative outfit.
- Provide drug education in-service to all faculty and support staff.
- Plan activities using “The Red Ribbon, A Story of Hope”, “Robbie Rabbit”, “Stinky the Skunk” or “Doodlebug” Storybooks. See “The Shop” at "The Red Ribbon Store" for the Red Ribbon Storybooks.
- Invite parents to a special fair.
- Encourage students to sign drug-free pledges and “wallpaper” the school with pledges.
- Sponsor a “Say Boo To Drugs” Halloween Festival for students and their families. See “The Shop” at "The Red Ribbon Store" for “Say Boo” Products.
- Participate in and/or sponsor a Red Ribbon Poster, Essay or Photo Contest. For an example, see the “SC Statewide Red Ribbon Poster Contest 2009”.
